Yea, but at risk to yourself, so instead of telling you how to I'll just say this....block them or change your AIM name. Or block all names except those on your list.

It's just a lame prank.....your web browser has your IP address in it's header.....and they can see it/set up a script to display it....and whatever else they wish to do. It's notihng to worry about.

No offense but you damn AOL'ers get ****ked but the dumbest stuff out there!

This is one of the main reasons people without a decent grasp on how the internet works shouldn't be allowed to use it.

Again, I mean no offense but you're all pretty freakin slow when it comes to getting pranked.

Exclamation Hmm

I think it is "funny" how people get all freaked about someone knowing your IP address...

The online yellow-pages er whatever basicly give ANYONE the ability to get millions of IP addresses around the world.

An IP address gives NOONE the ability to take stuff from yas, or do anything desructive, you YOURSELF has to be stupid enough to D/L the virus/program that takes info. So stop worrying, and if your gonns use the internet, atleast get a little know-bout first eh?

BTW...

best site in case you need your IP Address in a Jiffy

The idea that an experienced hacker with your IP address cannot do anything to your computer without you knowing is blatantly wrong.

Any hacker who knows what he's doing can rather easily enter a PC with only an IP address.

Don't believe me? Find a hacker message board and post your IP address, and see.

Heh, if you say so, "Guest". If, by expirienced hacker you mean someone that works with security for a living, sure. If you mean the type of wanna-be teenager that goes around trying to scare people on AIM, probably not.

I'd say the mass majority of 'hacking' of personal PCs takes place because people don't bother to get security updates, don't bother to pay attention to what they download, and open e-mails from people they shouldn't be.

Even in the case of a really smart and expirienced 'hacker' going around trying to scare people on AIM or AOL (which, you would think they'd have better things to do, right?) the problem isn't as much the person's PC as they should just be smarter about who they talk to ANYWAY.

An educated user who has taken the time get all the updates, doesn't download things unless they know what they are (or only from a reliable site like CNET/Tucows), and is careful with their e-mail and IMs probably has a greater chance of being struck by lightening than of being hacked. Taking the time to enable firewalls or properly configure routers lowers the chances even more.

IP visible

First and foremost, your IP address of any current Internet session is 99.9... pct a "dynamic" one, if you use a dial-up connection. Meaning that every time you connect your IP address is "slightly" different, but <different> is what matters. If you are on cable or DSL, you have most probably a permanently assigned by your ISP IP address, and that means you should have a much more elevated set of worries about your Net security.
AIM, like any other ICQ application, establishes a direct connection between 2 or more machines that "chat" in live mode. That makes it necessary for each of these machines to "know" others' IP address(es). Once the source address is made known at the receiving end, it is only a matter of applying a small program to find it out. There are plenty of these.
To hide your "real" IP address during the ICQ session you have to apply a so called "address translation" to your connection
Try this: Proxy Stopper 1.03 and especially this: Proxycap
OR this: http://www.steganos.com/en/sia/info.htm - it might work as well.

Angry Re: AIM IP address spoofing

I've written:
AIM, like any other ICQ application, establishes a direct connection between 2 or more machines.. Sorry.
Correction:
AIM by default establishes a connection via AOL proxy servers. The IP address that a "buddy" can see with <netstat -an> command is address of a proxy, not that of his/her counterpart. Recently AOL stopped replying to <ping>, so a computer on AOL network cannot be traced. There is no known method of "spoofing" (faking) an IP address on AIM at the client's side, unless, like I said before, a firewalling method with NAT (network address translation) is employed. That normally requires at least 1 dedicated firewall/router machine. Even than it is not "spoofing" as such, but just "hiding".

Re: Hmm

I personally think it is "funny" how someone who obviously doesn't know much about the internet tells someone else they need to get a little know-bout. You don't need to download a virus/trojan that takes info for a hacker to get into your system. Sure you can get updates but tcp/ip has been the same for about 30 years. I also think it's funny how ppl get the term hacker confused. A true hacker wouldn't waste his time playing games on aim with someone he doesn't know. That would be a cracker, or most likely a script kiddie. Get your terms right, eh?

BTW...

an easy way to get your IP address on win2000 or later is to open up a command prompt and type IPCONFIG

On the Macintosh try Apple Menu --> Control Panels --> TCP/IP Control Panel

On Mac OS X:
Open system preferences Under internet and network, click 'network'. It will show your IP address..

Windows 95/98 try going to Start/Run and do the command winipcfg

Someone allready posted how to get an IP address on aol, but once again open a direct connection and type " netstat -an " and a bunch of #'s will come up and one will be theirs

TOMMY OH !! LOL ... yeah I agree with you if you have no experiences with hackin and tracking issues ... I had some experiences with IP TRACER but turns out it doesnt track AIM so I want one that can do AIM tracer so I can find out exactly location they are at so I can make them know not to mess with me ... I am getting tired of them now block then new one pops up so I want to track him and see if he can test my skills.
