First, do you really think an 11 year old should be using AIM? As someone who has been on the Internet for a while (not at age 11), someone who has worked for a major ISP in the Community Chat / Message Board environment, I assure you that an 11 year old should not been given AIM.

If your preteen REALLY needs AOL (do they?), then I suggest actually paying for AOL, they have pretty extensive parental controls where you can control every aspect of their online experience. Otherwise, I would hightly suggest against giving an 11 year old access to AIM.

That said, I do not believe there are any parental controls for AIM built into the software. Try using TIW (TheIdeaWeb) to search for such a program.

Best of luck.

Also Note!

If you really need to speak with them, try an alternate network. There are more, and I'm sure if you google that, it'll give you some that will enable them only to create an account and only talk to certain people...

I've seen 9-year-olds on that @#$# and they type 'babe' and 'sexy' and 'nothin much u' as if they're older! These kids can't do that if they want to actually understand the English language, and to give them AIM or ANY Chat client whatsoever can possibly hurt the development of their minds. I, myself, have used a computer since the age of 10, and used MSN since 11, and luckily I haven't been overtaken by the disadvantages of typing so much to people. Have a nice day!

I have them using aim through the chat client that comes with Mac OSX. It doesn't seem to have access to community chats. That is good.

It is the community chats room that I think are so innapropriate for kids. That is why I was hoping there was a way in AOL inatant messenger to disable community chats
