Hi. My question is whether the typing indicator shows only for the person one is chatting with, or whether any time he types a response to another buddy the indicator shows.

More specifically: I was chatting with a friend last night. Several times I saw "typing" or "entering text" on the bottom of our window, yet received no response or text. Would the indicators have shown if my friend were responding to another buddy at that time?

Yes, maybe your friend is just typing/chatting with someone else or just searching the web or seomthing. As long as he/she types, you'll see "entering text." It doens't have to be entering text in your IM box.
