They aren't charging "just for giving the URL". They are charging because they spent time and effort programming DeadAIM...which means work.

Don't you like to get paid for your work?

Well... he didn't HAVE to make the program, you know. It was his choice, he did it for fun, but suddenly realized he could make a profit. But wait... he sells a program... that's not too uncommon these days, but to charge money for something that's an add-on of a free program? The program itself doesn't cost any money, why should anything that has to do with it? You know what I think, if anyone should get money it's AOL. Even though they have ads on sign on and sign off, and everywhere in between, they are the ONLY ones who deserve money for it. THEY are the ones who did all of the work. Sure, this guy made a neat little program in his spare time, it happens to be useful, but he wouldn't be making a DIME off of this program if AIM was never created. So, it's wrong for him to charge anything for this. Sure, it was hard for him to program it, but if he feels that he has to get money for any hard work he does, then he shouldn't be programming.

As I understand it, he realized he was *losing* money in the form of bandwidth fees, etc. The program cost is designed to offset that. Support staff has also been added, which also costs money.

Websites aren't free, you know.

If operating systems hadn't been created, application makers would wouldn't be making one DIME off of their programs, either. Is it wrong for them to charge?

What, exactly is it that you do for a living? Do you deserve to get paid for that? Why exactly do you think that programming isn't something that that people should get paid to do? Seem like software developers get paid all the time to me.. seems logical to pay someone for their time..

Im not downloading it

This moron things he can charge people for some little program. It probly didn't even take him that long to make the program, probly in his spare time. An this is just some small add-on to AIM who should be geting the money. This guys a moron, I mean is everyone tring to make money of some little program like this. And as far as his website and bandwidth costs its not like he has a large website with large bandwidth need. He probly pays a two hundred a month for it, tops.

So maybe he pays $200 a month for the server. Maybe this guy made it in his spare time, possibly. So you pay $5 for the program. Thats about $4.25 after PayPal takes out its fees. But then the program was coded in C++, that program retails for $999.00. But hey, maybe he got it for free. You see, in all of this we are assuming the best. But what if he goes to school? Where does that $200 a month come from? As Americans we want everything for free, but everything costs something. For $5.00 you're getting a great AOL Add-on, and the programmer wants to be compensated. Do you really think he is going to become rich off of this program? Possibly, but unlikely. I just spent $6.50 for a calzone. Imagine, for the price of five cans of pop you're getting a program. It seems like a good deal to me.

By the way, why is he a moron? Because he's intelligent enough to program something no one else did? Because he is intelligent enough to provide support and means for mass distribution? Because he's intelligent enough to have stuck around this long, unlike many other AOL add-on programmers? That's one smart moron.

you need to [profanity removed] additude. He has money otherwise he wouldnt have started the web site in the first place. The idea of charging any money for such a small program that realy doesnt do much. Besides I can get his little add-on for free. Im not gonna pay for it but I will use it.

Actually, I don't need to do anything with my attitude. You're on my website, you see.

At any rate, one, you are wrong.. and two - people should be paid for the time they spend working. Period.

If the program is so easy to create, create one yourself.

Do you want to meet behind the bike racks and settle this? I mean come on, how old are you? More importantly, how mature are you? No need to answer, this is one of those rhetorical questions.

I have tons of programs that I purchase that don't "Do much." I purchased them because they are great for what they do.

Okay, I'm not spending any more time arguing this one.
