in september of 2001 someone posted a message that said:

"ok i did this once before and i can't remember how i did it ... can someone help me... on aol i got a certain window and typed in someones screen name and it showed me all their other screen names ... can someone tell me how i did it ??????????"

in response to this message someone posted a message in june of 2002 that said:

"yes, i have done that once. do you know the screen that comes up when you sign on to aim? their used to be a thing where you could put in someones screen names you knew, or email, but im not sure. then you would push go, next, whatever and it would show you. if you have installed 4.7 or higher its not on there anymore. i still need to find out somebodys other screen names but its not on the thing that pops up when you sign on. so thats all i know about it, so if you know whow to find someones screen name, or other ones they have, contact me "

now i was wondering if anybody knew what this person was talking about and could explain it a little more thoroughly. do you have to have aol to do this or can it be with aim too? and is there any other way besides the find a buddy search in aim to find someone's screen name?

As far as I'm aware this "feature" is a myth -- It never existed. There is no feature on AOL or AIM that will allow you to find all of someone's screen names.

Are you talking about finding someone's screen name with an email address? I'm guessing you're not, but if you go to PEOPLE >> FIND A BUDDY >> BY EMAIL ADDRESS, you can type in an email address and get a list of all the screen names that person has.

Im guessing Im missing something here though, as Im sure AMJones is aware of this feature.

Well, I gave the answer I did mostly because the original post that the person was quoting was about AOL screen names, not AIM... there is no such feature on AOL. It was one of those posts where someone asked an AOL question and a whole bunch of people answered with AIM answers.

Another reason I didn't mention the FindABuddy feature is that it only works if the user has chosen to list their screen names; something like 10% of users do this. Most people that are looking to find "ALL" of someone's screen names are looking for someone that's trying to hide theirs. As such, the feature wouldn't work.. why mention it just to have the person come back and say "no that doesn't work, there has to be something else".

Make's total sense . I admit I haven't used the feature since 2000 or so, so I really cant attest to the quality of the results. I learn something new here every day

If the person has set up a member profile in AIM, they may have listed their email address in it. You can right-click their name in your buddy list, or choose People in the menu, then Get Buddy Info to get the information.

If they chose to provide other information but not their email address, then you can search for that information (i.e. "My name is Bob Smith and I attend Fleegle University"-- see if Fleegle U. has a website and a student directory there. ) This, by the way, is why people warn you not to give out personal information anywhere, as a skilled searcher can find out more about you than you've revealed to them.

If they choose to provide no information at all, you're out of luck. They're too smart a cookie for you.

i am searching for an old friend, and i am not sure how to look up his email address. i have his name and know the town that he lives in, but i am not computer literate, so i am not sure how to go about finding his email address to drop him a line. can anyone help?

WELL, I have no idea what anyone is talking about. i want to find a girls aim adress. i just got mine set up, but i don't know how to find my friends so that i can add them. i don't know their emails or anything else. is the only way to get their aim address, to ask them?
