I had the same problem, it seems that it is due to the javascript not been registered anymore...
just go to start->run and type regsvr32 jscript.dll
and everything will work again! (search, hotmail, gmail, and other java apps)

woohoo!

In fact I've to reboot to 98 in order to post to this site!

I had the same problem when I was on SP1. And it blocked for new downloads from Windows Update.

I downloaded and installed Service Pack 2 (SP2) from www.microsoft.com

This solved the problem.

Search Companion error / Windows update blank

Ive tried these following things:
regsvr32 -u jscript.dll
regsvr32 -u vbscript.dll
(unregistration succeeded)

deleted the files and restored from cd.
and also tried the ms scripting update 5.6
and also the scripten installer (which I think is the vbscript stuff)

regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 vbscript.dll
regscvr32 mshtml.dll
(registration succeeded)

with and without reboot inbetween, no luck.

also

reinstalled srchasst.dll (or whatever its called)
reinstalled ie.dll
tried to reinstall scripten.dll (failed) (this was the name of the supposed vbscript file)

Anyone with anything to say please email jjk005@mcdaniel.edu

What are you trying to do? You may also not want to post your email address on the public forum. Chances are you'll get spammed to death now

thanks for all the tips and advice.. i think the answer is here, but not sure.... so here goes..

i have 3 computers in my house all connected to one hub then to SBC modem.

my hard drive died recently and i had to install XP on a new drive. which worked fine.... i have since done all the updates.... SP2. now for soem reason i cannot go to any sites that are HTTPS. Hotmail, myEbay, my-myspace (well sometimes),i can not send Gmail and so on. they all seem to be HTTPS related. sometimes i can go to the website, but not log in or not send. My XP firewall is turned on. i trie dwith it on or off doesnt matter....

around the same time as my problem started my housemate began experiencing a similar problem. she has win 98 or 2k (98 i think) she can go to yahoo, but cant send mail. i tried my hotmail, gmail, ebay, myspace on her machine and the same results as on my machine.

here is the kicker.... the 3rd puter in the house is perfectly fine..... he has XP also. i can go to anywhere and everywhere just fine. his XP firewall is turned off.....

i have tried many things... i am out of ideas.....

thanks
Steve

TRhanks,
GR

I just tried to bring up the login page at hotmail.com in both Firefox and IE. NO LUCK. Blank pages in both browsers.

IE reports errors in lines 6 and 7 of the code.

Hopefully, whoever is monkeying around with the log in page gets it fixed soon.

After installing the download, restart your computer and see if it corrects the problems. Stop back here and let us know.. it'll help out others as well.

Hope this helps!

IE/FF and Hotmail error

Alright, this is probably the weirdest thing yet to happen to me.
When I try to go to hotmail, it just gives me a blank white page.
Not sure how to fix it = \

But not only this... it seems the only way I can even browse the net without getting a FF/IE error to where it shuts down both programs is to open up my search from Start > Search... Don't even ask me how this makes it fixed, it just does, I have no understanding of it, but I will post back with the error report if you'd like.
