After downloading some "essential" Windows updates from Microsoft.com I began experiencing the same problems desribed here.

They are:
1) Cannot access Hotmail. The page is blank with "Done" written in bottom left corner.
2) Can access Yahoo mail. But I am unable to compose emails as the box where one writes the email is blank - I am unable to write any text in this area.
3) Norton Antivirus - I can access Norton Systemworks for about one second - as soon as the box appears on the screen it disappears again.

I have tried all the suggestions on this page so far, aside from dumping a GHOST image back onto my computer. I do not know how to do this.
After downloading the "Windows Script 5.6" patch from Microsoft my email did work at first. However, upon checking back an hour later I experienced the same problems described above.

I really am not sure what to do at this point, except for maybe reinstalling Windows. I would rather not do this as I do not feel entirely comfortable doing this (ie. I am a computer imbecile). But I follow instructions well. Any more tips on this problem would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

Same problem

Hi,

This is a crazy *** problem! I'm just about to reboot after installing Windows Script 5.6 from the link you posted up there ^

To help Google searchers find this one I'll write the symptoms out again:

Search Companion does not work
Windows Update site appears blank
Hotmail appears blank
Yahoo Messenger text not visible

T.B.C...

Everything back to normal (from first inspection)

Yup...

...that seems to have done the trick! Windows Script 5.6

Why is this happening?

Recently installed:

Windows updates
F-Secure Antivirus 5.41
Zone Alarm

Recently uninstalled:

Norton Antivirus 2003
Norton Personal Firewall 2003

Those are the most recent changes to my system prior to this strange anomaly. So if anyone else can remember what they just installed/uninstalled before getting this bug, maybe we can find a pattern and use the process of elimination to narrow down the culprits?

Follow up:

I had my friend over today who's a bit more knowledgeable about computers than myself.
The primary concern was what was blocking our access to Norton Antivirus, which although installed on my computer, was not responding.
Somehow I had gotten a virus which had turned off Norton's automatic screening and blocked our access to the program.

So, my buddy went into Safe mode and we found a couple of viruses lurking there. I had the MSBlast.exe and wmpupdate.exe (more widely known as Gaobot).

After getting rid of these viruses, Norton Antivirus was back up and running.

In addition, hotmail and yahoo mail are back up and running. I had downloaded the Windows Script 5.6 patch several times, and while it worked for about an hour, the sites went blank again later. I must assume that it was the viruses overriding the downloaded patch.

good luck folks.

Pattern?

Yes the pattern is "things that screw up Windows Script Host".

If you see Norton Antivirus shutting itself down .. then you got a virus. Simple as that!

Smile Another happy customer

Well, another happy shopper here. I had the same issue, and nothing would fix it, even a reinstall of windows (repair). The script update worked a treat.

Thanks
Jon

Angry

The WinScript update does not work for XP.
I have the same problem with Netscape and IE to log in Hotmail. And in several mail-online sites it cannot send a letter - blank page appears

The problem is Microsoft secure bug. They(Microsoft) advice to install their patch 813951 that debug the previous pack, But the problem is , that all that packs demand SP1 upgrade, and when it even SP1 IE6 - they say "you dont have the SP1 version", but I do. The bug is that it can recognize that you have SP1 version, so actually you cannot instal the Microsoft patch.

Microsoft official note : "There is an issue caused by the February 2003, Cumulative Patch for Internet Explorer (810847) where users could potentially be unable to log into MSN mail accounts or authenticate with a web site in various programs. To address this issue, please see Microsoft KB article 813951.
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=813951

And it is impossible in XP to uninstall Explorer 6, cause it's build it.

Good find, Colin. From what I'm understanding in the Microsoft KB article, if you obtain all of the critical updates from the windows update site, you should be good to go...
