I can't see Hotmail/secure sites with Win XP

I've had these irritating problems with XP Pro.

Rang my ISP and he gave me a number to put into the Proxy Server Address.

Get there with Tools/Internet Options/Connections/Settings

Click Proxy Server check box.

For Virgin.net ISP in the UK I entered:

62.252.192.4 and 8080 in the Port.

Obviously get your number from your ISP.

Good luck. I know how frustrating this is.

Jason.

Mubashar you are a god, thank you!!!

Enabling the metarefresh option under Internet Options, Security, Custom was the solution for me too (WinXP Pro & IE6)

Attention Mubashar / any interested Microsoft programmers.
An interesting sidebar is I only had the hotmail problem on my wife's user account on my laptop. My login account (original master user on this laptop) has never had this problem. The only difference between the two accounts (apart from my account being the original) is that I initially increased my wife's IE6 security settings, and then subsequently relaxed them.

Unhappy To AM Jones

I am desperate to get some help with my problem, which has similarities to other posts here. Not only do I get a blank page when I try to access Hotmail or ISP mail account, my computer will not recognize shortcuts, such as the links you have listed in your responses.

Another problem I'm having is not being able to open a new window (minimizing sends the current window into obscurity). My Norton Antivirus seems to be a factor in this problem, as I cannot run Live Update. The recommendations are to uninstall and reinstall Live Update, but I am denied the ability to uninstall.

It was suggested I try the free edition of Grisoft AVG, but they send you a link by email which doesn't work. They do have a deep system virus cleaner, which I was able to install, but it does not indicate it found any viruses.

Interestingly enough, I can access one email account which is through a Yahoo group. I can only read mail. I cannot delete, forward, or send new mail. I cannot add other email addys as the shortcut links in POP won't work.

I have read and reread the instructions here, but I cannot find a Host file anywhere.

I have had a variety of issues surface over the past three days, such as not having a task bar on my startup screen (which finally came back after numerous restarts), not being able to search for files/folders (still a problem), not being able to delete programs, etc.

My son has two sharewear programs installed, but they are used infrequently. The only changes/incidents that occurred prior to the online crash were:

1. I uninstalled a program named Radio Toolbox I installed to
assist a friend who was uploading a larger server for his
station.

2. On the night the problems occurred, I was flooded
with popups (the new versions that float across the screen,
etc.). This new version seems to have bypassed my current
popup controls. They virtually shut my system down, and
I could do nothing but spend the time to manually delete
them (there must have been 100 or more - all for autos,
which I wasn't even looking at). I crashed shortly after.

I am at my wits end, to say the least. I can't access any of my professional mail accounts, or use my printer. My system is virtually useless as it now exists.

Do you have any suggestions...given that I have so much trouble accessing links, shortcuts, etc? I have tried everything I know (which isn't much), and I just don't know what to do next.

Thank you for any help you might provide.

Karen S

Oh yes, my Windows System Repair capabilities are not functioning. They are disabled and won't let me reset that. I think I may also have a problem with java scripting.

Hi, guys!! I'm having the same problem for last 4-5 days. I'm running Windows 98 and first I thought it's just a bug or something like that. It actually started bothering me in last couple of days - I've tried everything I could, every suggestion even barely related to Win 98. Downloaded and installed the script that was given here on first page - nothing works. Somebody help!!! Thanks in advance!

Hi,

I'm having the same problem just that I'm using mozilla instead of IE.
It was fine yesterday, but after I unplug my hub and moved my table, plug everything in again, I could no longer get into hotmail.
It will take a long time to load, after which a blank page is loaded and the word "Done" appears.
The link you gave gives me a blank page too.
So that means it is something about my securtiy setting?
I haven't done anything other then moving my pc as far as I know.

Thanks in advance!

Question

Ms Therapy and others : I had the same problem until I applied the Q831167 update of Microsoft. My problem now is that this patch often disappears, which make me set it up once again....By the way, most of these problems seem to have links with Lovsan/blaster virus : unable to copy/paste, unable to click on a link, unable to move icons etc....

I am on Windows 2000 Pro, using AVG as antivirus and all possible little sharewares that fix lovsan/blaster (without getting permanently rid of these bugs)
